Custom-fitted shoes used to be an ugly sight. However, today’s custom-fitted shoes prescribed for severe foot problems do not have to be ugly, clunky models of the days gone by. Molded shoes begin with a cast of a patients foot which is then used to make a replica of the foot. A shoe is molded to this model to accommodate the particular problem. Soft, lightweight materials are now available to produce shoes that are attractive as well as comfortable. Custom-fitted shoes may be necessary when conditions such as severe diabetes, circulatory problems or arthritis leave feet debilitated or deformed. Individually molded shoes are especially helpful when corrective surgery isn’t an option to relieve chronic conditions.

P.S. The cast used for custom-fitted shoes can be reused. This means additional pairs of shoes are often less expensive than the first.
